Untouched Worlds

Niuatoputapu and Niuafo’ou are two remote, far flung island groups north of Vava’u. Access to the islands is limited and people are few so life is as it always has been – untouched and beautiful. Here is an opportunity to learn Tongan cultures and traditions amongst those living in harmony with their land and sea

Niuatopatapu (Sacred Island)

Devastated by the tsunami in late 2009 much of this lovely island is in rebuild mode.  Here you will find fine white beaches with great walks and immense peace and quiet.  This is a great place to unwind and enjoy some of Tonga's finest tapa making and participate in local life.  Check out Hunganga Island and the freshwater Niutoua Spring.

Niuafo'ou (New Coconut)

Niuafo’ou is the tip of an underwater volcano, created by underwater eruptions long ago. The crater lake is unique – an island within a lake within an island .... and the island is home to pristine forests and birdlife. Nicknamed Tin Can Island because this was the manner in which mail was delivered (thrown overboard to strong swimmers) the island has a enchanting history.

Twitching

Interestingly enough the Niuas postal stamps are a collectors dream featuring many of their lively and rare birds including the Polynesian Megapode.  To find this one you will trek across the black-lava beaches and hike inland to a sulfur-rich crater lake. The Megapode incubates its eggs in the warm volcanic ash.

Diving & Snorkelling

You will have the ocean to yourself and the natural residents of the sea.  Active volcano activity adds to the warmth of the water and the lack of people means an abundance of coral reefs and wildlife.

Peace & Quiet

No restaurants, traffic, shops or nightlife - just sleepy villages, deserted beaches, colourful sealife, beautiful sunsets and nature at her finest.  when you want to experience a different way of living and touch base with the south Pacific at her finest then the Niuas really are very special.
